Leading lawyer Cherie Blair, wife of the former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, was Tuesday chairing a debate here looking at the role the media plays in shaping the lives of young women, the organizers said.

The "Women in Journalism" event, sponsored by the cosmetic company "Dove", was featuring 100 school children discussing the effect newspapers, magazines, and television have on young women's lives with leading commentators and editors.
It will be one of Mrs Blair's most high profile public appearances since she left No. 10 Downing Street with her husband this summer..

Mrs Blair said in a statement "This is not an easy time to be a teenager, with girls in particular feeling under increasing pressure to be pretty and thin." "This will be a unique event, bringing together over 100 ordinary school girls and boys to discuss the way media coverage of teenagers makes them feel about themselves, their bodies and their lives," she added.
