China's Finance Minister Jin Renqing has quit and been demoted to a think tank, a government spokesman said Thursday, amid reports he was sacked for his role in a sex scandal.
"Due to personal reasons, comrade Jin Renqing has tendered his resignation and the central government has accepted his request," an official from the information office of the State Council, or cabinet, told AFP.
"The government has already approved his appointment as vice-director ofthe State Council's Development Research Centre."
The position of vice director at the centre is equivalent to the rank of vice minister in China's complex political system.
Hong Kong's Ming Pao newspaper said Jin was sacked after he introduced a woman to Chen Tonghai, the chairman of oil giant China Petroleum and Chemical Corp (Sinopec).
Chen "shared" the woman as his mistress with Du Shicheng, a former Communist party secretary in the city of Qingdao, where the sailing events of the 2008 Olympic Games will be held, the paper said.
The relationship between Jin and the unnamed woman was not clear, the newspaper added.
Chen, born in 1944, had been finance minister since 2003. He was previously director of the State Administration of Taxation and vice mayor of Beijing.
