Cigarette butt to identify bomber in Ankara
The police have intensified efforts to discover the identity of the would-be bomber in a planned attack in Turkey's capital, Ankara, which was prevented when police found a van near a multistory car park packed with 600 kilograms of explosives on Tuesday.

After finding that the driver of the vehicle smoked four cigarettes and left them in the ashtray before leaving the van in the car park, the Counterterrorism Office sent to the cigarette butts for DNA testing in a crime lab. While the test revealed that the driver was male, the lack of a DNA bank means the results will have to wait until a suspect is arrested.

Acting on witness statements claiming that driver spoke with an Arabic accent, police have begun to investigate all suspected foreigners around Turkey coming from the Middle East and Arabic countries.

Police examinations of the van also showed that the vehicle was cleaned before the explosives were loaded, making the police suspect that is might have been outside of Ankara earlier. According to police the driver was in the van for at least an hour, making it possible for him to smoke four cigarettes. Officers also found many fingerprints around the vehicle but none matched any in police records.

Meanwhile US Ambassador to Turkey Ross Wilson went to the Ankara Security Directorate for a briefing on allegations that the target of the foiled attack was the US Embassy in Ankara. National Police Chief Oğuz Kaan Köksal informed Wilson about the thwarted attempt, saying only a single connection would have been needed for the explosives to be activated. Wilson reportedly congratulated Köksal and the Turkish police for their success in preventing a disaster.
