A protester opposed to the expansion of Heathrow airport threw green liquid at Business Secretary Peter Mandelson on Friday when he arrived at a meeting in central London.
Live television pictures showed a woman approaching the business secretary shortly after he got out of his car and throwing a cup of green liquid into his face.
The protester, Leila Deen, from environmental group Plane Stupid, later told Sky TV she was protesting about the government's hypocritical policies on climate change.
Mandelson was attending a conference aimed at promoting the development of low-carbon industries.
Mandelson spoke to media outside the venue about the incident after he had cleaned himself up.
"I don't quite know what the point she was making because she was so busy throwing what seemed like green soup or something in my face that she failed to tell me what the protest was about," he told Sky.
"But as you can see it wasn't paint and I've come through it intact," he said.
The government approved plans in January for the expansion of Heathrow airport by adding a third runway and another terminal, angering environmentalists.
