Colombian kidnapped governor killed

A Colombian governor allegedly kidnapped by FARC rebels was killed shortly after gumen snatched him in a surprise raid on his home and then fled into remote jungle.

His body was discovered on Tuesday as troops scoured the remote jungle to rescue the politician.

Acting Caqueta governor, Patricia Vega, told local radio that the government had confirmed Cuellar's body was found near a vehicle abandoned by the rebel commando squad.

"Unfortunately we have to accept this painful reality," Vega said.

The FARC, or Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, had yet to issue an statement on the kidnapping.

The FARC is holding 24 police and soldiers hostage, some kidnapped more than a decade ago and kept in jungle camps.

The governor's kidnapping occurred after the guerrilla group announced a plan to release two hostages. But his killing will likely scuttle the handover for now.
