Congo, Belgium to normalise diplomatic ties

Congo and Belgium agreed on Saturday to normalise ties strained last year.

Belgian Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy and Adolphe Muzito, prime minster of the Democratic Republic of Congo, had agreed a joint declaration on the move, a Belgian foreign ministry spokesman said.

"It is common text that leads to a normalisation of relations," Bart Ouvry said. "There has been a positive atmosphere in the past few months."

Ouvry said the first signal of the normalisation would be approval by Congo of Belgium's former Washington envoy Dominique Struye as ambassador to Kinshasa, which was expected soon.

Congo withdrew its ambassador to Brussels after Belgian Foreign Minister Karel De Gucht criticised the Congolese government during a visit to Congo in April. It also asked Belgium to close its consulates in Lubumbashi and Bukavu.

President Joseph Kabila named former Budget Minister Muzito as prime minister in October following the resignation of Antoine Gizenga the previous month.
