A Russian court issued a warrant on Tuesday for the arrest of billionaire former oil company boss Mikhail Gutseriyev, who is accused of tax evasion and illegal activities, a court spokesman said.
In July, Gutseriyev accused the Russian government of 'unprecedented bullying' after his company Russneft received back tax demands totalling $800 million. Gutseriyev resigned from the company on July 30, blaming state pressure, and said he was ready to sell it to a conglomerate with close Kremlin ties.
'Investigators ... have asked Tverskoy district court to put Gutseriyev under guard. The court approved the request,' said a spokeswoman for Moscow city court.
She said she did not know where Gutseriyev, whose personal wealth has been estimated at $3 billion, was now. 'On Aug 6, he was put on the wanted list and and it was decided that he should be arrested,' the spokeswoman said.
A Russneft spokesman said he had seen Gutseriyev as recently as early August.
Gutseriyev's 21-year-old son, Chingizkhan, died in a car accident last week. He was buried in the family's native region of North Ossetia on Thursday in a Muslim ceremony attended by the president of neighbouring Ingushetia.
