Credit cards spending up by 10 pc in Turkey

Consumers in Turkey spent 204.7 billion Turkish liras (nearly 137.5 billion USD) using their credit cards in 2009 with a ten percent increase over 2008, said Monday a report by an inter-bank credit cards center.

The number of credit card transactions mounted to nearly 1.9 billion, which marked a 39 percent hike in credit card use over the previous year.

Turkish holders spent 665 million TL, the biggest credit card sum in 2009, on the new year's eve, which was followed by Valentine's Day spending with 642 million TL.

The number of credit cards issued in Turkey was 44.3 million as of December 2009, the center said.
