Six firefighters were killed and seven injured while fighting a forest fire on Kornati Island in Croatia's central Adriatic Sea, Croatian media said Friday.
Four of the injured firefighter were listed in critical condition, doctors told the Jutarnji List, a Zagreb daily. Five of the injured firefighters, with severe burns were rushed overnight from a Zadar hospital to a Zagreb clinic.
The fire on Kornati Island, part of the Croatian Kornati national park archipelago, broke out Thursday afternoon. The men who were killed died of smoke inhalation, police said.
The fire line was about 6 miles long and 1 mile wide and the flames were changing direction as did gusts of heavy winds.
About 100 firefighters, park rangers and army soldiers succeeded to extinguish the fire by early Friday, police said.
Police said they were investigating six people detained on Kornati Island in connection with the fire.
