The death toll of a bush fire on Croatia's central Adriatic Kornati island rose to 11 firefighters Thursday, doctors in a Zagreb hospital said.
Drazen Slavica, head of the regional firefighters association in the central Adtiatic town of Sibenik, was dismissed and arrested Thursday in connection with the fire, the biggest disaster of firefighters in Croatia, Zagreb's Vecernji List said.
Police said Slavica, who ordered 23 firefighters to be flown by helicopter to the wildfire site on the island one week ago, was detained on suspicion of committing a serious crime against public security and endangering human lives and property.
Six firefighters were killed and seven injured while fighting the fire Aug. 30 on Kornati Island, part of the Croatian Kornati national park archipelago.
Five seriously burned firefighters were taken to a Zagreb hospital and all have died in the past week, doctors said.
Two seriously injured firefighters were listed in critical condition.
