The meeting is taking place at the residence of Michael Moeller, the chief of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) Mission and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General to Cyprus.

Moeller welcomed Christofias and Talat, who arrived in his house one after the other. The meeting started after press organs took the photographs of Talat and Christofias.

Both parties to monitor stances

During the meeting qualified as the beginning of a new negotiation process, Turkish Cypriot side will try to see how the change in Greek Cypriot leadership and the change in statements are reflected on the Greek Cypriot policies.

The meeting is important as it is the first time that two leaders meet after Christofias won the elections in the Greek Cypriot administration.

Turkish Cypriots believe that Christofias' interest in a settlement will be an important factor in the upcoming process, and try to see in Friday's meeting the extent of this interest and the stance of the Greek Cypriot administration on negotiations aiming to find a comprehensive settlement to Cyprus problem.

Talat will explain Turkish Cypriots' stance in the meeting, and tell Christofias that negotiations should be resumed and a solution should be found in the possible shortest time.

In their meeting, leaders will either find a common point or they will once more confirm the difference of opinion between the two sides.

Lokmaci Gate is also expected to be discussed in the meeting while leaders are expected to reach an agreement on opening of the border pass.
