Cyprus to inform on progress during UN's ban visit

President Mehmet Ali Talat of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias met under the second round of intensified talks aiming at finding a comprehensive settlement to Cyprus problem.

The issue of "Management and Share of Power" was discussed during the meeting.

UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer said following the meeting that a significant progress was made by the parties.

Refusing to give detailed information, Downer said that a statement about the "progress" would be made during the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's visit to the island next week.

The meeting took place at the residence of Taye Brook Zerihoun, special representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus, in the buffer zone in Lefkosa.

Meanhwile, President Talat, said on Thurdsay the upcoming visit of Ban Ki-moon to Cyprus was "extremely important".

Speaking at a meeting with Turkish Cypriot businesspeople and investors in Gazimagusa, President Talat said that with Ban Ki-moon's visit there was a possibility for a step towards a solution in Cyprus.

If we can take that step, we gain a serious benefit, Talat noted.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will arrive in Cyprus to encourage and support the two sides, Talat said.

If the two sides display a will for a solution, the process would be completed successfully, Talat emphasized.

Reminding that the Turkish Cypriot side had a goal to reach a solution by the end of 2009 or the beginning of 2010, President Talat said that "I still carry the same notion. The year 2010 could be the year for a solution in Cyprus".

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will travel to Cyprus on Sunday.
