A deputy prosecutor of Dagestan capital, Makhachkala, was killed by an unidentified assailant early on Friday, Russian news agencies reported.
Maksud Maksudov, the head of a prosecutor's department dealing with prisons in the Caucasus region, was shot dead as he was coming out of his house and getting into his Niva Chevrolet , Interfax quoted a police officer as saying.
One of the most populous regions in the mainly Muslim north Caucasus, Dagestan borders Chechnya which declared independency after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 but was attacked by Russian forces in two wars since the mid-1990s.
Still low-level insurgency continues in Muslim states controlled by Russia.
Earlier in the day, four fighters were killed in a special operation in Dagestan's Tabasaran district.
