Israeli military has ordered that ministers, legislators and public figures visiting units in the field be given binoculars with the lens caps already removed.

The Yediot Ahronot daily reported Wednesday that the initiative follows a recent incident in which Defence Minister Amir Peretz was photographed watching military manoevres though binoculars whose lenses were still covered.

Peretz, already under fire for his lacklustre performance in the defence portfolio, came in for more widespread ridicule when the photograph was widely distributed in local and international media.

Former prime minister Ariel Sharon was also once photographed in a similar embarrassing situation.

The Israel Defence Force spokesman's office said it was in the dark and had no information about the new order.
