Egypt on Monday nominated Culture Minister Faruq Hosni as a candidate for the top job at the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
"President Hosni Mubarak has agreed to the nomination of Culture Minister Faruq Hosni to the post of director general of UNESCO which becomes vacant in 2009," the ministry said in a statement.
Appointed in 1987 as culture minister, Hosni is the longest serving member of Mubarak's cabinet and an abstract painter who has exhibited his work around the world.
Koichiro Matsuura of Japan has filled the post of UNESCO director general since 1999 and will next year have served a maximum two terms.
