Egypt summoned ambassadors from European Union countries on Wednesday to demand better treatment of Egyptians at their embassies in Cairo, a Foreign Ministry official said.
Egyptians who have sought visas at European embassies have sent the Foreign Ministry an accumulating number of complaints, assistant foreign minister Ahmed Quwaisni said in remarks carried by the state news agency MENA.
"It gives a non-positive picture of the countries of the European Union in their dealings with the Egyptians who go daily to the embassies to get visas," Quwaisni said.
The Egyptian government sent European consulates a memorandum last week on the same issue.
The memorandum included "criticisms of the performance of these missions ... and the bad methods their employees follow, such as evasion, incompetence and ambiguity about what visa applicants require", a statement said at the time.
Most Europeans visiting Egypt can obtain a visa on arrival within minutes. Egyptians seeking visas to European countries sometimes have to present stacks of documents and wait weeks.
European governments say they have "legitimate" worries about illegal immigration into Europe, where millions of people are living and working in violation of immigration laws.
Egypt cancelled talks earlier this year with senior EU officials after the bloc criticised the Arab country's human rights record. The EU is Egypt's largest trading partner.
