Syria has become the guest country of the trade show which will remain open till February 15.

"EMITT 2009 Eastern Mediterranean International Tourism and Travel Show was opened at Istanbul's TUYAP Fair, Convention and Congress Center.

Making opening remarks of the annual trade show, Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister Ertugrul Gunay said that Turkish tourism sector grew by 13 percent while there was a sharp decline in the world tourism sector.

"We hosted more than 26 million foreign tourists in Turkey last year thanks to the hospitality of our people, and gained nearly 22 billion USD. On the other hand, we are aware that there are some measures to be taken immediately. A four-article package envisaging new arrangements for employment, taxation, finance and structure of the tourism sector will be prepared soon. The package will provide Turkish tourism sector with significant facilities," he said.

Tourism Minister Sadallah Agha al-Qala of Syria, this year's guest country, said on his part that his country attached great importance to its tourism relations with Turkey.

He said that number of Turkish tourists visiting Syria increased to 288 thousand in 2008 from 23 thousand in 2003.

EMITT 2009

Nearly 3 thousand firms have taken part at this year's trade show.

More than 100 Turkish cities and towns promote their natural and historical assets.

Syria has become the guest country of the trade show which will remain open till February 15.

More than 100 thousand people are expected to visit the exhibition.

Meanwhile, the First International Holiday and Health Conference will be held on the sidelines of the EMITT 2009.
