The Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, thanked on Thursday all Turkish workers and engineers for making Turkey proud with their works overseas.
Speaking at a ceremony in Ankara to award Turkish contractors for their achievements in 2008, Prime Minister Erdogan said that his government pays high attention to foreign contacts and is working to constantly increase Turkey's foreign trade volume.
I am always proud to hear the successes of Turkish contractors from the presidents and prime ministers of respective countries, Erdogan said.
"In 2002, Turkish contractors worked on overseas projects worth 1.7 billion USD. In 2008, this amount would go as high as 25 billion USD. Our goal in the near future is to have projects worth 50 billion USD on which Turkish contractors are working," Erdogan said.
Turkey deserves such a great amount for its contractors, Erdogan said.
"Turkey ranks third in the world, after the United States and China, as far as projects assumed by its contractors overseas. This is important as it indicates the potential of Turkey. Facilitating a stable environment that is guided by an atmosphere of confidence and the efforts of the Turkish government to eradicate problems will help Turkey reach its potential. No one should doubt this. We will continue to succeed," Erdogan said.
"The construction sector plays the role of a sponge. It swallows unemployment with the contribution of sub-sectors. The construction sector is the engineer of economies throughout the world. Disregarding the construction sector results in heavy unemployment and undesired consequences. In the past six years, the Turkish construction sector grew 20 percent annually. In 2007, certificates for 125.7 million square meters were issued. We helped Turkey's construction sector through the activities of the Turkish Housing Administration (TOKI) and by erecting new highways under the leadership of the Turkish Ministry of Transportation. In the past six years, we began constructing 336,000 residences and finished the construction of 230,000 ones. We have constructed highways for a total of 9,227 kilometers. In addition, we have announced action plans for diverse projects such as the South-East Anatolia project (GAP)," Erdogan also said.
