Erdogan: Presidential election is unknown

"Unfortunately, presidential election is an unknown for the time being under recent circumstances. What is going to happen is not clear yet. We hope that our country will not pay a heavy price," Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday.

Replying to questions of journalists, Prime Minister Erdogan said, "there are general elections ahead of us. Therefore, we need to assess everything very carefully. We should not take any steps that could make election process difficult, unless they are vital. The most important thing at this point is democracy. Recent acts of terror aim at weakening our democracy and tranquillity. We should not be deceived."

"Unfortunately, presidential election is an unknown for the time being under recent circunstances. What is going to happen is not clear yet. We hope that our country will not pay a heavy price," he said.

When recalled that President Ahmet Necdet Sezer had not yet signed the constitutional amendment package envisaging election of the president by popular vote, Prime Minister Erdogan said, "the president has the right and authority of keeping the package for 15 days."
