EU 'should see Turkey making progress toward membership'
Turkey's Chief Negotiator for EU talks Bagis met with Austrian Minister for European and International Affairs Michael Spindelegger in Alpbach
Turkey's Chief Negotiator for European Union talks Egemen Bagis met with Austrian Minister for European and International Affairs Michael Spindelegger in Alpbach on Tuesday.
Bagis said his meeting with Spindelegger addressed bilateral relations, Turkey's accession process and recent EU reforms in Turkey such as the amendment of customs law, television broadcast in Kurdish, and radio broadcast in Kurdish and Armenian.
"Turkey's EU membership is particularly important in terms of Europe's needs rather than Turkey's," Bagis told the Anadolu Agency.
Speaking after the meeting Spindelegger said there were a number of important developments in Turkey which the EU watched very carefully.
"The important thing here is to see that there are certain positive developments on both sides. Turkey should first convince its people that the EU is the right direction to take. And the EU should see that Turkey is making progress toward becoming an EU member." Spindelegger said.
Bagis is expected to participate later on Tuesday in a panel discussion on Turkey-EU relations at the Austrian Foreign Policy Institute.
