Solana's spokeswoman, Cristina Gallach, said William Burns and Javier Solana spoke in Brussels Thursday ahead of talks with Saeed Jalili in Geneva.

In telephone conversations, Solana also spoke with representatives of the 5+1 group.

The Saturday meeting is expected to review the common points of the package of incentives put forward by the 5+1 group and the proposals of Iran.

The United States has decided to send its third-ranking diplomatic official, William Burns, to join the representatives of Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany in talks with Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili.

The decision marks a U-turn in Washington's previous demand that Tehran should suspend uranium enrichment to enter talks with the country on its nuclear program.

"Iran has repeatedly said it will not accept the suspension of enrichment as a precondition for talks on its nuclear program" said Pres TV, Iranian news agency.

"Solana told Burns that his participation could only have a positive impact," said the spokeswoman, Cristina Gallach. "We hope the Iranians are going to understand the importance of this decision" to attend.

A senior U.S. official said Wednesday Burns "is there to listen, not to negotiate," but his presence at the table meets a long-standing demand from Iran to have the U.S. involved although EU thinks that Solana's participation have a positive impact.

US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack also said Thursday that Burns will meet Secretary of State Rice in the UAE next week to personally brief her on the Saturday meeting.
