EU to hold special crisis summit on March 1: Topolanek

European Union leaders will hold a special summit on March 1 to discuss boosting cooperation within the bloc amid the economic downturn, Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek said on Wednesday.

The Czech presidency of the EU has called the summit to discuss national protectionism, following French President Nicolas Sarkozy's suggestions that French car makers should move plants back home from the Czech Republic.
"We will meet on March 1 here in Brussels," Topolanek told a news conference after meeting European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

Barroso said another extra summit would be held in May to discuss ways to preserve jobs.
