Europa Nostra to hold cultural heritage summit in Turkey

Europa Nostra, Europe's leading federation of NGOs working on cultural heritage, will hold a summit in Istanbul in June.

Speaking at a press conference on the "European Cultural Heritage Summit" to take place in Istanbul between June 8-13, Europa Nostra's volunteer director Orhan Silier said the federation aimed at acting as the voice of European civil society caring for cultural heritage.

Silier said that Europa Nostra developed campaigns to protect the cultural heritage sites at risk and to raise public awareness on such matter.

Commenting on the upcoming summit in Istanbul, Silier said the gathering would bring together the NGOs carrying out activities on Turkey's cultural heritage.

Within the scope of the "European Cultural Heritage Summit", several meetings will be held at various locations in Istanbul such as Tophane-i Amire, Yildiz Palace, Dolmabahce Palace and Kadir Has University in an effort to highlight the city's cultural heritage.

As part of the summit, "Europa Nostra Forum" will be held on June 11 with the participation of prominent intellectuals such as Umberto Eco, Amin Maalouf and Felipe Fernandez-Armestro, as well as high-level officials such as EU Commissioner Androulla Vasillou, Council of Europe's Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland, the head of International Council of Museums (ICOM) Allisandra Cumins and director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre Francesco Bandarin.
