European Commission to look into AKP verdict
The European Commission (EC) will look into not only the verdict of the closure case against the ruling Justice & Development (AK) Party, but also its reason.

Amadeu Altafaj Tardio, the spokesman of the commission, said on Monday that the commission should see both the verdict and the reason of the closure case.

It was not a right thing to comment on the possible impact of the case on Turkey-European Union (EU) full membership negotiations before the case was concluded, Tardio told his regular daily press briefing.

Tardio said that every one had to respect the court, but highlighted importance of the principle of separation of forces.

Turkey's top court began earlier on Monday deliberating the closure case against the AK Party. The court will meet every day until they decide whether or not to shut down the party.

Chief prosecutor Abdurrahman Yalcinkaya asked the Constitutional Court in March to close Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's AK Party and ban him and 70 other party members from politics for five years.

Under the Constitution, qualified majority of votes is required to disband a political party. Accordingly, at least 7 out of 11 members of the court need to vote in favor of the closure of the party.

The court can also rule to deprive the AK Party of financial assistance of the Treasury instead of its dissolution.
