EU's Rehn in Slovenia for Croatia border row talks
EU Enlargement Commissioner Rehn came to Slovenia for talks on resolving a border row with Croatia.
European Union Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn came to Slovenia on Wednesday for talks on resolving a border row with neighbouring Croatia which has blocked Zagreb's progress towards EU membership.
Rehn's visit was the European Commission's most concrete involvement in the simmering row between the countries. Brussels sees borders as a bilateral issue and not part of membership talks.
"Commissioner Rehn is coming on a joint initiative... and we will talk with him about all possible ways to come to a solution," Foreign Minister Samuel Zbogar told reporters.
Last month EU member Slovenia vetoed a dozen negotiating chapters in Zagreb's accession talks due to the dispute, which involves land and a stretch of sea border that the two have not been able to settle since Yugoslavia collapsed in 1991.
Many local analysts believe that if the Slovenian veto is not lifted quickly, Croatia will struggle to complete accession talks this year.
