EU's Rehn says talks with Turkey continue 'with stability'

Speaking on the EU's enlargement policy in Brussels, Rehn said that they will continue to work so that Turkey and West Balkans join the EU gradually.

Entry negotiations with Turkey continue slowly but with stability, Rehn stressed.

Turkey is a strategic partner of the European Union, Rehn said.

Expressing pleasure over the amendments made in Turkish Penal Code's Article 301 that promoted freedom of expression in Turkey, Rehn pointed out that "the Foundations Law in Turkey strengthened the rights of non-Muslim minorities".

Rehn said that they expect more reforms from Turkey.

Olli Rehn advised a discussion on the benefits of enlargement at a time when the elections for the European Parliament are coming up.

Rehn warned that, unless the benefits are discussed in depth, pessimistic views may succeed in influencing Europeans in a period of economic crisis.
