Ex-Iraqi defence minister to 3 years in prison

Baghdad's Central Criminal Court sentenced former defence minister Hazem al-Shaalan to three years in prison for corruption, Iraqi anti-corruption authorities disclosed Monday.

Baghdad's Central Criminal Court sentenced former defence minister Hazem al-Shaalan to three years in prison for corruption, Iraqi anti-corruption authorities disclosed Monday.

The same court sentenced Shaalan to seven years jail in absentia on May 30, 2007.

Shaalan, who had been earlier accused of administrative corruption over fake arms deals worth 300 billion US dollars, had served as the defence minister in the interim government of former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi in mid June, 2004.
