The first political party formed by immigrants in Italy will be officially launched on Thursday in Rome.
The 'New Italians - Immigrants' Party' is a project of a group of non-EU citizens of different nationalities conceived after the government voted a draft law earlier this year aiming to give voting rights to immigrants who have been living in Italy for at least five years.
"This is a multicultural, moltiethnic and multireligious party which aims to represent both 'old' and 'new' Italians while safeguarding the rights of women and men, the elderly and children," organizers say.
"If Italians were to vote today with the proposed new law, 1.5 million more voters would cast their ballots, a number which would grow to 2.2 million in 2008," said the new party's spokeswoman Maria Pratsiuk. Italy today has approximately 3.2 million immigrants.
The party's chairman is Moroccan born Mustapha Mansouri.
