Five people, including two policemen, were shot dead in a failed attempt to rob a bank in Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos, the police and residents said Thursday.
"We lost two officers while three of the bandits were killed in a shootout," a senior police officer told AFP.
He said the police had beefed up security around a bank at Ilupeju on Wednesday following intelligence reports that armed robbers were planning an operation in the area.
"The entire vincinity of the bank was condoned off by our men. But the robbers still came and we engaged a fierce gun-battle with them which resulted in casualties on both sides," he said.
Resident Kayode Ayoola confirmed the incident.
"There were sporadic shootings around First Bank, Ilupeju. At the end, there were five bodies on the ground, including those of two police officers," he added.
