The number of people who died due to the overflowing of the Omo River in Dasenech and Gnangatom Woredas in South Ethiopia Peoples' State has reached 194, the South Omo Zone Administration said.
The flood burst-out from the Omo River flooded ten kebeles in Dasenech woreda and killed 125 people until 3:00 pm local time on Monday, accoring to officials.
Public organization and mobilization social affairs head with the administration, Daniel Dagne told Ethiopian News Agency that 470 households have been rescued from the flood in particular in Gnangatom Woreda.
The head said strengthened activities were underway in collaboration with the administration and the defense forces with a view to rescuing the people surrounded by the flood.
However, he said, the efforts to rescue the people surrounded by flood in Ebba, Derchi, Gnamuri and Yebul villages in Dasenech Woreda has failed due to the inaccessibility of the areas by boat.
The Federal Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Agency has been transporting nutritious food, canopies and other materials to the area, the head said.
