The 22-year-old McLaren Mercedes Benz driver stopped at the exit of the pit-lane when the session was barely a minute old and it looked as if he had problems.
Team mechanics had to push his car back into the team's garage where they quickly rectified the fault to get him back onto the track in less than half an hour.
The young sensation then blasted to the top of the time-sheets as he ended the session 0.041secs quicker than Ferrari's Felipe Massa with a time of one minute 27.325secs.
Brazilian Massa's team-mate Kimi Raikkonen was third quickest less than 0.2sec adrift with Fernando Alonso fourth in the other McLaren.
Hamilton leads the championship by seven points from Alonso with just five races left after Sunday's Grand Prix at Istanbul Park.
