France, Syria in first high-level meet since 2005

Talks between the two men were expected to focus on the political crisis in Lebanon, as well as on Iraq and the Israeli-Palestinian situation.

Former French president Jacques Chirac suspended high-level talks with Syria after his friend Hariri was killed in Beirut in February 2005. An initial UN inquiry implicated Damascus, although it has denied any involvement.

Friday's talks on the sidelines of an international conference on Iraq in Istanbul came after Kouchner cancelled a September meeting in New York in response to the assassination of a Lebanese anti-Syrian MP.
