Franch senate head supports Turkey's EU bid despite Sarkozy

Turkish Parliament Speaker Mehmet Ali Sahin met with Gerard Larcher, the president of the French Senate, in Ankara on Wednesday.

Following their tete-a-tete meeting, Sahin told a joint press conference that he was grateful to Larcher as he had an impartial and foresighted stance over Turkey and that he prevented prejudiced and provocative efforts against Turkey.

Sahin said their meeting discussed Turkey's EU accession process, adding, "we told our strategic targets and reforms made in Turkey as part of EU negotiation process."

Larcher, on his part, said that he was the first French Senate president to pay a formal visit to Turkey since 1958, which he said was a move that could be described as political will.

Asked about French government's stance regarding Turkey's full membership to EU, Larcher said it was quite obvious.

"It is known how I am loyal to President (Nicolas Sarkozy). But this loyalty does not stop me being free," he said.

Recalling that some of the negotiation chapters were suspended and could not be opened, Larcher said French officials expressed their opinions frankly.

"But some people are not outspoken like us," he said.

Turkey's president Abdullah Gul also received Larcher. .

Their gathering was closed to press.
