French strike disrupts Paris airports

French air traffic controllers began a two-day strike on Wednesday, causing severe disruption to flights from airports close to the capital, aviation authorities said.

Around half of all flights were cancelled at Orly airport while only 6 out of 10 scheduled departures from Roissy-Charles de Gaulle managed to take off.

However, by the afternoon, some 85 percent of flights were running as expected at Roissy, said the DGAC civil aviation authorities.

Cold weather and rain added to delays of between 30 minutes and two hours at the two airports.

The air traffic controllers were responding to union calls to protest against planned job cuts as the airports seek to streamline activities.

The strike will be extended to Thursday, when around half of all flights from Orly airport and around 15 percent from Roissy are expected to be cancelled.
