Gen. Buyukanit dismisses Lokmaci Gate openning
"The opening of the Lokmaci gate is not a big step towards a fair and a lasting settlement," Gen. Buyukanit told.
Turkish Chief of General Staff Gen. Yasar Buyukanit said on Saturday a joint decision by Turkish and Greek Cypriot leaders to open the Lokmaci gate was not a big step for peace.
"The opening of the Lokmaci gate is not a big step towards a fair and a lasting settlement," Gen. Buyukanit told a press conference in Lefkosa.
Buyukanit said the Turkish Armed Forces "was the guarantee of a fair and a lasting settlement" on the island.
"You need to clarify what the concept of a fair and a lasting peace would mean and the parameters of such a settlement should be defined clearly and it must be shared with the public opinion," Buyukanit said.
"Our goal is to give Turkish Cypriots a safe, prosperous life free of isolations and any settlement in the future should be based on the sovereignty of Turkish Cypriots and their equal rights," he said.
"The Turkish Armed Forces will continue to protect the Turkish Cypriots until a fair and lasting settlement is reached on the island," Buyukanit said.
