Georgia FM says to free Turkish captain 'shortly'

Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze said the Turkish captain Coskun Mehmet Ozturk who was taken into custody in August by Georgian authorities would shortly be released.

Vashadze and his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu held a joint press conference Tuesday following Davutoglu's meeting with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili.

Davutoglu told reporters that he communicated Turkey's demand for release of detained Turkish captain, expressing his hope that he would soon be released.

Davutoglu who has been in Georgia since Monday, brought up the issue in his meetings with Georgian Premier Nikoloz Gilauri and Parliament David Bakradze.

Georgian Coast Guard arrested in mid August a ship named "Buket" along with its 17 crew, carrying fuel oil to Abkhasia, which unilaterally declared independence from Georgia, leading to a conflict between Georgia and Russia.

16 members of the crew were released on bail while the captain of the ship, Ozturk was sentenced to 24 years of imprisonment.

The court announced on September 4 that it would reassess the sentence.
