Georgia seeks foreign monitors for Russian pullout
"We need immediate withdrawal, we need verification of withdrawal and ceasefire, preferably by EU and OSCE monitors," Saakashvili said.
President Mikhail Saakashvili said on Sunday Georgia wanted a withdrawal of Russian troops announced by Moscow to be monitored by international organisations.
Saakashvili was speaking at a news conference with visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel hours after Russian President Dmitry Medvedev announced Russian troops would begin pulling out of Georgia around midday on Monday.
The 10-day confrontation around the Russian-backed breakaway region of South Ossetia has brought accusations from both sides of attempted genocide. Relations between the Russian and Georgian leadership are marked by deep mistrust.
"We need immediate withdrawal, we need verification of withdrawal and ceasefire, preferably by EU (European Union) and OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe) monitors," Saakashvili said.
