German FM says 'needs Turkey's growing influence'

German Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle has said Turkey's relations with the European Union were of great importance economically, culturally, scientifically and politically, adding that Turkey was bridging country which could reach out to all parts of the world.

Speaking at a joint press meeting after his meeting with Turkey's Chief Negotiator for European Union membership talks Egemen Bagis on Friday in Istanbul, Westerwelle said Turkey had a significant impact on the region.

German companies need to cooperate with Turkey if they want make new investments. We need "Turkey and its influence here given the situation in Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq and the Middle East", Westerwelle said.

The German foreign minister said the opening of a Turkish-German university in Istanbul was also on the agenda of his talks with Bagis.

"We cannot ignore a growing country like Turkey. We need to take Turkey into consideration both politically and economically," Westerwelle said.

Westerwelle later visited Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Istanbul and met with Patriarch Bartholomew.
