German mayor meets Turkish Cyprus PM in Lefkosa
The Turkish Cypriot prime minister received a German mayor in Lefkosa on Friday.
Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) had a meeting with Hans Peter Schick, the mayor of German city of Weilburg, in Lefkosa, TRNC.
"Improving such relations is of vital importance for Turkish Cypriot people who want a settlement and are working for it," Soyer said during the meeting.
Soyer said that the steps Schick had taken to boost relations despite all obstructions encouraged the Turkish Cypriots.
The Turkish Cypriot premier said that Weilburg was developed in education and TRNC was progressing to become an island of education.
Soyer expressed his belief that such contacts would be beneficial for improvement of relations among universities.
Schick said that Turkish Cypriot people were very close, and he had seen close cooperation opportunities in economy, education and ecology.
The mayor also said that he had fruitful talks with his interlocutors regarding municipality reforms, and decided to cooperate with Girne Mayor Sumer Aygin.
Weilburg is, with just under 14,000 inhabitants, the third biggest town in Limburg-Weilburg district in Hesse, Germany, after Limburg an der Lahn and Bad Camberg.
On schooldays, Weilburg's educational institutions are attended by more than 8,000 young learners.
There are six universities in TRNC, including Near East University, Girne American University, Middle East Technical University, European University of Lefke, Cyprus International University, and Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU).
