Gov't plans Turkey to turn into global research, development hub
Turkish government plans to increase its support to science and technology investments and aims to turn the country into a global research and development (R&D) hub, Turkish State Minister Mehmet Aydin said on Thursday.

Aydin delivered a speech at the Turkish R&D Day, organized by the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe in the European Parliament together with Turkish research and business organizations with the theme of "Boosting R&D Excellence in Times of Economic Downturn: Insights from Turkey".

Aydin said Turkey was working hard to become one of the top ten economies in the world.

For this purpose, Aydin said, Turkish government significantly increased R&D expenditures and put into practice a national science and technology strategy in 2005.

"We aim to make Turkey a global R&D hub," Aydin said.

Turkey went far beyond its target to educate 50,000 researchers until 2010 and put a new target to educate 150,000 until 2013, Aydin said.

"We expect obstacles to be removed before the free movement of researchers, which was announced as the fifth freedom in EU. We are ready to it. EU should display the same stance," he stated.
