Greek cabinet minister quits weeks after election

Greek Deputy Interior Minister Dinos Rovlias resigned on Tuesday, the first member of the new Socialist government to step down since its Oct. 4 election victory.

"He (Rovlias) submitted his resignation to preclude any suspicion of clientelism under the current government," government spokesman George Petalotis was quoted as saying by the semi-official Athens News Agency.

A spokesman for Rovlias confirmed the resignation.

Greek media reported earlier on Tuesday Rovlias had intervened on behalf of policemen and army personnel who sought transfers to other posts.

During the election the Socialists campaigned heavily on an anti-graft platform. The minister's resignation will be a blow to the government as the economy teeters on the edge of recession, the first since 1993.
