"The fire service took an envelope which has been sent to health services for further tests," a spokeswoman for the fire brigade services said. The envelope was considered suspect by embassy personnel, she said.
She said it was sealed and authorities did not know what it contained. Parts of the embassy had been disinfected, she said. Earlier, police and fire brigade sources said the envelope was thought to contain a suspect powder.
Reuters witnesses said fire brigade personnel were earlier seen in the compound of the embassy wearing protective suits. Fire brigade staff had started to leave, one witness said.
A spokesman for the embassy had no immediate comment.
