Greek socialists keep wide lead before vote: Polls

Two polls published on Sunday show Greece's opposition socialists maintaining a wide lead over the ruling conservatives ahead of an October 4 election, with absolute parliamentary majority within their reach.

The socialist PASOK party, led by former foreign minister George Papandreou, is 6.1 and 6.2 percent ahead of the New Democracy party of Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis, surveys conducted by polling firms MARC and ALCO respectively showed.

The ALCO poll shows the socialists winning between 151 and 155 seats, just above a 151-seat threshold needed for absolute majority. MARC shows the socialists just two deputies short of one-party rule, with a tally of 149 seats.

Public support for the socialists comes in between 35 and 35.9 percent, with the conservatives trailing at a range of 28.9 and 29.7 percent, according to the two polls.

Plagued by scandals and the global economic downturn, Karamanlis earlier this month called early elections.
