Greenpeace activists evaded tight security to stage a climate change protest at a European Union summit in Brussels on Thursday, unfurling banners and urging a strong EU stance at global talks in Copenhagen.
The activists managed to stage their protest in the courtyard outside the summit building before being bundled away by security guards, having driven into the venue in a van similar to those used by official delegations.
Several unfurled yellow Greenpeace banners which read "EU save Copenhagen" and one, dressed in a suit and tie, read out a statement.
"Greenpeace calls on European heads of state to help secure the strongest possible agreement on climate change in Copenhagen" he said. "We must act now."
Leaders meeting in Copenhagen are seeking agreement on a successor to the Kyoto Protocol for fighting climate change. It expires in 2012.
