Gul: Big picture must be seen for incidents in Gaza
President Gul said that "a cease-fire between Israel and Palestine must be established immediately."
Receiving the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Ahmed Ali Aboul Gheit, in Ankara Monday, Turkey's President Abdullah Gul said that "a cease-fire between Israel and Palestine must be established immediately and relations normalized".
"Humanitarian assistance to the region must also begin immediately," Gul said.
Sources told that Gheit's current visit to Ankara was decided during a phone conversation between Gul and his Egyptian counterpart Hosni Mubarak on Sunday.
Aboul Gheit briefed President Gul on the situation prior to the Israeli attack on Gaza and the aftermath of the attack.
Gheit conveyed Egypt's thoughts on the future of the region to Gul.
President Gul told Gheit that the big picture must be seen in regard to the incidents in Gaza.
Gul pointed out that there should not be a division between Palestine and the countries of the region.
"A cease-fire must take place immediately and the situation normalized. It is important for humanitarian assistance to reach the region," President Gul stressed.
It would be in the interest of all parties to facilitate a comfortable atmosphere whereby the new U.S. administration can contribute to the peace process, Gul also said.
