Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul submitted the petition regarding his candidacy for presidency to parliament speaker Koksal Toptan on Tuesday.

Delivering a statement right after Gul submitted his petition to Toptan, State Minister and Deputy Premier Mehmet Ali Sahin said that they nominated Gul as a presidential candidate together with 34 party members.

A total of 232 MPs from AK Party signed the petition nominating Gul as a presidential candidate, sources said.

Also in a press conference, underscoring that following the constitution of the Republic of Turkey would be his basic principle and priority, presidential candidate Abdullah Gul said, "The constitution will be our guide."

Talks with opposition parties

In press remarks after talks with leaders of Turkish parties, he said he sensed his people's support for his candidacy.

On his talks today, Gul met leader of the national movement (MHP) Davlet Bahceli to rally support for his candidacy. He said the meeting was productive and added the MHP is to take part in the vote session on August 20.

He added he is still to hold talks with leaders of other Turkish parties represented in Parliament on this issue.

The ruling Justice and Development Party renewed its nomination of Gul for the post of president yesterday.
