Unknown gunmen shot a Sunni Islamic cleric in Sokoto, Nigeria's north, on Wednesday and fled the scene, but police refused to say whether the victim had died of the injuries.
The cleric, Dahiru Umaru, was shot in the hips and left for dead.
Anxious followers rushed the cleric to the Othman Dan Fodio University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto for treatment.
The shooting of the cleric was the second in four months in Nigeria's north.
Another Sunni Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ja'afaru Mahmud Adam, was shot to death in Kano, two days before the April governorship elections in the country.
Commissioner of police in the state, Shehu Othman, confirmed Wednesday's shooting, but told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur.
Police spokesperson in the state, Mohammed Umar, said the shooting took place in the Sokoto metropolis and that the police were conducting investigation into the incident.
Umar said: "The gunmen succeeded in shooting the cleric, but we do not know whether or not he died from the gunshots. Doctors are not allowing anybody to see him for now."
Umar said the assailants drove in a black-colour sports utility van to a popular mosque in Sokoto, where Umaru was billed to deliver a lecture.
