'Gunmen' shot dead Mumbai attacks lawyer in India

"Gunmen" shot dead a lawyer representing one of three men accused of involvement in the deadly 2008 Mumbai attacks, police said Thursday.

Mumbai police said only that defence lawyer Shahid Azmi had been killed and his body taken to a city hospital.

No further details were immediately available, although Indian media reports said he had been shot several times at point blank range by a number of armed men who burst into his office.

Shahid Azmi was shot at by unknown gunmen in a Mumbai suburb.

"He was shot at in his office. We have to ascertain the identity of the assailants. We have some clues," said Deven Bharti, an additional commissioner of police.

The trial of the two Indian nationals, and the man accused of being the lone surviving gunman from among the 10 who attacked Mumbai, is ongoing in the city. There have been reports of threats to lawyers of all three.

At least 166 people were killed in the attacks.
