Hamas has indicated that it may be considering a one-year ceasefire with Israel, as it reduced its rocket fire from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel.
A previous Gaza truce ended in the middle of May when Hamas increased rocket attacks into Israel, killing two Israelis. Israel has killed more than 60 Palestinians in counterstrikes on Gaza.
The efforts to halt the bloodshed will be the main subject in a meeting next week between Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, and Ehud Olmert, Israel's prime minister.
Abbas, the leader of Fatah, has been trying to press coalition partner Hamas to renew the truce.
