After a week of heavy snowfall in the southern and eastern part of Turkey, many cities in western Turkey have also been hit by heavy snowfall.

Snowfall in Istanbul will accelerate this afternoon after tapering off this morning, Anatolian news agency reported.

Meterology officials warned that snowfall will be heavy on the Anatolian side of İstanbul tonight.

The Istanbul Ferry Lines (İDO) also announced that ferries between Yenikapı-Bandırma and Armutlu-Yenikapı-Bostancı have been canceled because of adverse weather conditions.

Road conditions are also tricky. Drivers had a hard time controlling their vehicles on icy roads, especially in the higher elevations of the city.

Meteorology officials expected the heavy snowfall to continue until new year and warned residents about icy roads.
